Although we live in an area where the winters are fairly mild, we still end up being indoors a LOT more during the winter because of the dark evenings! We tried making “indoor snowballs” today, and they worked well for burning off some steam indoors.
We got this idea from a reader tip in the December 2010 Family Fun magazine. To make them, you need white pantyhose or tights and some fiber fill (stuffing).
We used some white tights. Having lived in an all boy house, Aidan said, “What are those??” I told him, “They’re what girls wear under their dresses.” He thought they were weird.
Cut the tights into sections and stuff with fiber fill.
These were made out of the same sized pieces, but Aidan stuffed the one on the left, and I did the one on the right. After seeing his, I went back and added a LOT more fiber fill to the ones I had done! These were both the toe section, but I still made only one knot on the ones that were tube shaped. I just stretched both ends and tied them together.
Now, I don’t know about your boys, but mine can turn even an innocent activity into a way to damage things, so we knew that this game was not going to work as a free-for-all. We played a dodge ball type game with our snowballs first, then practiced catching them from farther and farther away, and then tried tossing them into the laundry basket. Lots of fun, lots of activity, and nothing got broken! The snowballs are so lightweight that they don’t hurt people.
What are your ideas for indoor active play during the winter?

I just wanted to say that I love the photo at the top of your blog, of the toddler playing in the dirt with the shovel and dump truck. So perfect! It says so much about the importance of play for young children, true messy natural play. No power cords, batteries, or predetermined concepts.
Cute snowballs! Sounds like a fun indoor activity and I like that there’s no mess. This was one of my favorite posts for last week and I’ve linked up to it here: http://play2grow.blogspot.com/2010/12/weekly-favorites-for-december-26-2010.html
