This activity is definitely filed under “if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em!”
My boys love turning their silverware into catapults to fling food (grapes work really well for this
). Why not let them do it? Although I must add that we used cotton balls and not food…
The boys were so surprised when I pulled out a package of plastic forks and a bag of cotton balls and told them what we were doing!
This was the only cotton ball that I managed to photograph in the air! They fly fast!
We experimented with different angles because the fork-flat-on-the-table method launches the cotton ball straight up in the air. By propping up the fork, we were able to launch things forward! **Aidan is now launching a wooden cap from a tinker toy set. It seems like these games always evolve into something more and more wild…
…like shooting each other with cotton balls like this!
The boys played with their forks and cotton balls for a solid 30 minutes and only stopped because we said it was time for baths! You can’t beat good, cheap family fun!

I have a feeling my boys would love this activity! I just need to go buy some plastic forks…
