Lego Building Challenge: Build a Car that Rolls the Farthest

 It’s time for a new LEGO® building challenge!  If you’re new to Frugal Fun for Boys, let me explain how LEGO® Fun Fridays work.  This Friday, I’m announcing a new building challenge.   Next Friday will be the LEGO® Fun Friday blog hop where you can come back and see what we built and link up your own LEGO® post.  Posts for the blog hop can be pictures of your children’s LEGO® designs for the building challenge or any other designs that they want to build.  LEGO® learning activity posts are also welcome!  (In general, the first and third Fridays of each month are blog hop Fridays, and the second and fourth Fridays are when I announce the building challenges.  However, November has five Fridays and a holiday week in it, so I’m not exactly sure what my schedule will be… )

Also, if you don’t have a blog but want to participate in the challenge, feel free to e-mail photos to frugalfun4boys at gmail dot com, and I’ll include your children’s creations in my post!

And now, on to this week’s challenge!

This week’s challenge is to build a LEGO® car that rolls the farthest!  Here’s how we are measuring the distance our cars can travel:

We found that our train table board makes a great ramp!  The boys have been releasing cars down the ramp and then measuring the distance that they travel across the floor.  Unfortunately, our bumpy tile floor has been ruining some of our runs.  We may have to find somewhere to go that has a smooth floor!  Possibly the garage?

Get your kids thinking!

• Do cars travel farther with more weight on them, or less?
• How do different size wheels affect the car?
• Do cars travel farther with larger front wheels and smaller back wheels, or vice versa?
• What factors with the ramp set-up might affect the outcome? (We had trouble with our ramp sliding, so we put a piece of masking tape on the floor so that we could line the ramp up with it each time and make sure that our trials were equal.)

Also, Duplos would work well for this activity as well if you have younger kids.
