Exploring greater than and less than with construction trucks and blocks

Last week I tried an experiment. I made Owen his own checklist of school activities on Friday. He LOVED it, which was good because it kept him busy, but bad because now he will expect me to have a list prepared for him every day! It won’t actually be too difficult, though, because his list will include play activities along with 1 or 2 academic things such as completing a page in his preschool workbook. (I have a post coming soon with what we use for preschool curriculum – stay tuned!)

On Friday, Owen’s list said “Construction Truck Counting,” and he was very interested to find out what that meant! He and I did some counting practice with construction trucks and Duplo Legos.

I told him to scoop and dump two piles of Duplo blocks:

Then I asked him to count his two piles and tell me which pile had the greater amount of blocks.

His counting is still a little rough, especially once he gets past 7 or 8, so we found that lining up the blocks in a row made them easier to count and keep track of.

We repeated the process several times until he was tired of it. School is just fun when you are using construction trucks and blocks!
