Yarn Nests for Easter

A couple weeks ago, I saw this idea for yarn and glue nests on The Imagination Tree, and I knew that I wanted to do them! I am so happy with how they turned out, and this project was easy enough for my 3 year old to do with only a little help from me.

To make one, all you need is yarn, white glue, and a round container to form the nest around.

Step 1: Cut the yarn into lengths that would fit the size container you’re using.

Step 2: Completely soak the yarn in glue.

Owen wasn’t sure about this step at first because of the sticky hands, but then he got into it and really enjoyed the process! This is definitely a very “sensory” activity.

Step 3: Arrange the yarn around your container to look like a bird’s nest. (When he was finished, I had to fill in some empty spots and fix the shape a little.)

Step 4: Let your nests dry for at least 24 hours, and maybe more depending on your weather and humidity. Ours dried well, but if it’s humid where you live, maybe a hair dryer would help speed things up?

Step 5: Carefully peel the dried nest off of the plastic container. The nests are pretty forgiving if some of the yarn strands are stuck on and you have to pull them off.

I filled our larger nest with some paper Easter grass and three plastic eggs, and it is so cute! We’re planning to make some more for the Easter dinner table.

More Ideas for Easter:

Last year, we made a resurrection garden for an Easter centerpiece. I called it the procrastinator’s version because we did not have time to make it with real grass seed! We were still happy with the way it turned out.

I also made an Easter egg match-up game with sight words for Gresham. You could also do this with capital and lowercase letters, or numerals and dots, etc., and all you need is paper, scissors, and markers!

I like many of your ideas. I am using them regularly. Usually my 8 yo is reluctant to start. This project was met with enthusiasm.
