Kids will love making and giving these adorable butterfly Valentine cards! Smarties candy makes the perfect butterfly body, and we used scrapbook paper in fun Valentines prints. They turned out SO CUTE!

Adorable Butterfly Valentines to Make

We were inspired by some butterfly Valentines that I saw on Pinterest. Gresham suggested that we change up the wings, and I loved his idea!

To make them you will need:

  • White card stock
  • Valentines print scrapbook paper – we found ours at Hobby Lobby
  • Smarties – we found bags of just Smarties at Walmart
  • Small buttons
  • Googly eyes
  • Pipe cleaners
  • Scissors
  • Elmer’s glue
  • Hot glue

Step 1: Create your pattern.

Here’s the pattern we created. I cut out a small heart and a slightly larger heart from card stock. Then I traced them on another piece of cardstock. I folded that piece of card stock in half and cut out the wing shape.

Each butterfly has one white wing piece cut from card stock, and then two large hearts and two small hearts cut from Valentines print scrapbook paper.

Step 2: Glue the hearts to the card stock with white school glue. Then cut antennas from pipe cleaners.

Step 3: Glue the googly eyes to the button. Glue the pipe cleaner antennas to the other side of the button. Attach the Smarties with hot glue, and then glue the face to the top of the Smarties package.

Then make more in different colors!

Kids can write the recipient’s name on the back of the card.

    Hi Sarah
Love this activity - will probably make them for family members
In Canada, we call the candies "Rockets"
Smarties are candy coated chocolate pieces
Thank you for all your wonderful ideas - have passed them on to childcare centres throughout our city

That's so interesting! Candy coated chocolate pieces would be M&M's here. Smarties have a mild fruity flavor. Thanks for your comment!

We have m&ms here too. Smarties (our version are made by Cadbury) and yes they are indeed called Rockets (a pressed powdery candy just as pictured above in the craft) for us.

Going to join in the Smarties and Rockets conversation. Rockets have a plastic wrapper with the logo on it, “Rockets”. “Smarties” is also a brand. It is chocolate candies covered in a coloured thin sugar shell. “M&M’s” are a brand name.
I don’t mean to make a big thing out of this but as the candy lover I am, your text hurts to read 😆😆😆.
    FYI I love your materials!!!

"Smarties" is the brand we used, and we're located in the US. We don't have a Smarties brand here that is a chocolate candy. I'm sorry it "hurts to read" but this is correct for us!
