Facebook can be such a useful tool for homeschooling! Last week, Gresham’s math curriculum, Making Math Meaningful from Cornerstone Curriculum, introduced the concept of a bar graph. I decided to take it a step further and have him make a graph of favorite candies. I posted a question on my personal facebook page, and within a few hours, we had more than 60 responses! (And some responded for each member of their family, so we had plenty of data!) In order to keep the data simple, we gave people four choices and asked which was their favorite: M&M’s, Skittles, Starburst, or Reeses.
Recording the data providing an opportunity for Gresham to learn how to do tally marks. It was tricky at first, but he got the idea.
Then he used linking cubes to make a graph of the data:
Using real world data for math is so valuable! This survey provided a very natural way to work with large numbers.
There are lots of options for a quick facebook survey:
- Favorite holiday
- Favorite fruit
- Color of hair/eyes
- Favorite animal
