We made homeschooling a little more festive this week with some Christmas tree math!
Gresham (1st grade) is working on learning his addition facts, so I made 6 trees with numbers on the trunks. I drew a line down the middle of the tree, and Gresham created math sentences by putting pom pom ball “ornaments” on the trees to equal the number on the trunk. For example, the “6” tree could have 2 on one side and 4 on the other, or 1 and 5, etc.
To expand the work, you can have your child write down a list of the math sentences that he or she has created.
Variations:
For younger kids, you can work on counting by just putting the number on the trunk and having them count out that many ornaments for the tree. Or, write an addition problem on the trunk, and have the ornaments be the answer. I am planning to make some more trees with larger numbers for Gresham, as these were pretty easy for him. Lots of possibilities!

I love this idea so much and am planning to turn it into a busy bag activity for our homeschool friends!
