Here’s a fun LEGO® craft that kids will LOVE – make duct tape capes for your minifigures!

This is a fun way to dress up minifigures that didn’t come with a cape, or replace a lost cape. Duct tape comes in so many awesome colors and prints, which makes it a fabulous crafting material.

After you make some duct tape capes, be sure to check out our LEGO® building ideas as well!

This post was originally published in January 2013 and updated May 2019. Part of the fun of this blog is that I can now do some of the same activities with my younger kids who were too little to participate the first time around!

These LEGO® capes were inspired by Busy Kids Happy Mom’s post for making Lego capes from duct tape. They were so easy and fun to make!

Supplies Needed:

Duct Tape

Ballpoint Pen

Scissors

An existing LEGO® cape, or you can find a pattern on Busy Kids Happy Mom.

Step 1: Tear off two pieces of duct tape and stick them together, sticky sides touching. Use two different colors if you want a reversible cape!

Step 2: Then, trace a LEGO® cape onto the duct tape with a ballpoint pen. (If you don’t have a cape, you can find a pattern on Busy Kids Happy Mom)

Step 3: Cut out the cape. Be sure to cut the slit. Punch two holes with a hole punch. I would recommend tracing the holes when you trace the cape – it makes it easier to hole punch in the right spot.

To put the cape on, remove the minifigure’s head and place both holes in the cape over the neck. The cape will need to crease/fold a little.

Then reattach the head and you are ready to go! This red and silver color combination looks pretty awesome.

We had so much fun making capes in different colors! My favorite might be the turquoise cape on the Chima lion guy.

Janie had to have a pink cape for her police girl, of course.

This project is the perfect boredom buster for a bad weather day!

Sarah - these turned out great! I love that they are so easy to make too. I just saw a fairy LEGO skirt and thought - do it with duct tape! ;)

Just made these for my boys as they were moaning their Lego Batman figures had no capes. Turned out great, much better than the paper ones I tried! Thanks

I pinned this a while ago but forgot about it. I came across it today when I was making a SNOW DAY GO DAY board for my friends to check out. I never comment on things from strangers' blogs, but I had to let you know that this totally wins our official Best Snow Day Activity Award today! : )
My sons think I am so cool right now.
    Thanks!!

I love these LEGO mini-fig capes (and should really make some for LittleMan, he always seems to be loosing the capes that come with his minfigs)!

Would really appreciate if you shared this idea on our Duct Tape crafts linky party at http://suzyhomeschooler.com/duct-tape-and-other-weird-crafts/

We just returned home from a Michael's Duct Tape Birthday Party with our four boys (plus one girl...) where they made wallets. Have a tonne of tape leftover, so fired up Google to search for other projects. Can't wait to bring this out on our next day off! #LegoFanatics

We made lego capes with taffeta, but you could use any silky, synthetic fabric. Just cut out the shape you want and melt the edges, so it doesn't unravel. I like to use a candle flame to melt. It takes a little experimenting, but my kids love them-- and they've held up for years!

These turned out so awesome! My kids were sad when their last cape's hole ripped and you saved the day! Also made some of the little vests based on one that came with Nick Fury :)
