Easter Cards with Marbled Coffee Filter Eggs

These homemade Easter cards were easy to make, and I’m so happy with the way they turned out!  We made the eggs by dyeing coffee filters with markers.

To make these Easter cards, you will need:

• Coffee filters
• Markers
• A medicine dropper or similar tool for dripping water on the coffee filters
• Construction paper
• Scissors
• Glue

Step 1:  Have your child make dots with markers all over the coffee filters.  I gave the boys only pretty spring colors so that we would not have cards with army green and brown eggs! (Their favorite colors – we can use those another day!)  Make a LOT of dots and really cover the coffee filter for the best results.

Step 2:  Have your child use a medicine dropper (we used some of our many water transfer pipettes!) to drip water onto the coffee filters.  I had some throw-away baking pans handy, so I used those to contain the mess.  For the best colors, don’t squirt water on the filters or the colors will wash off the filter altogether.  Doing drops of water and letting them soak in is better.  It’s interesting to watch the marker ink run!

We laid our filters on paper towels to dry, as the colors will bleed through.

Step 3:  Once the filters are dry (they dry quickly), cut out Easter egg shapes and assemble your cards.  I made a cardboard pattern for the boys to trace.  Owen (age 3) found the coffee filters too difficult to cut, so I did all his cutting.

Aidan (age 9) and I cut out the grass for the cards, and the younger two boys helped with gluing.  We were so happy with the way the cards turned out!

This week’s project is to write notes in the cards and mail them to family and friends.  When we have something nice like this to write in, I like to have the boys write a note of a piece of white paper (with lines) and then glue it inside the card.  That way, if we have a mistake, the card is not ruined!
