It’s mid-September in Texas, which is pretty much still summer.  We’ve been having highs in the upper 90’s, but the long range forecast has a few days in the 80’s, so we’re pretending that fall is right around the corner!

Owen and I used coffee filters and watercolors to make this sign to welcome the fall season.  I was very happy with how it turned out! We don’t have any real fall leaves around here (and won’t until November), so it was fun to make our own.

Coffee Filter Fall Leaf Sign

First, Owen used water colors to paint several coffee filters.  He did a GREAT job of using the colors that I wanted him to – green, brown, yellow, orange, and red.  The coffee filters bleed through very quickly, so we used a plastic tray to hold them while we painted so that they wouldn’t stain the counter.

Jonathan (20 months) got in on the fun too!  The beauty of this project is that any age can paint the coffee filters and the results are so pretty!

Then, we spread out all of our coffee filters to dry.  They dry quickly – less than 30 minutes.

Once the filters were dry, I used a brown crayon to draw leaves on them.  Owen helped with some of the cutting, but the filters are a little tricky to cut on, so I did most of this step.

I used a piece of posterboard for our sign, and I printed out “Welcome Fall” and glued it on.  Owen helped me glue on the leaves with Elmer’s glue.  Super easy!

We stuck sticky-back magnets to the back of our sign and put it on the refrigerator.  It looks great!

These leaves would also make beautiful homemade greeting cards!
