Last week, I spent more time on homeschool planning, and it really paid off.  Since I’m still in the middle of morning sickness, I didn’t worry too much about sticking to a theme for Gresham (2nd grade) and Owen (age 4).  I just picked things that I knew they would like and that would encourage fine motor skills – cutting, drawing, painting, etc.  Owen made a board game, Gresham and Owen made hidden animal art, and our last project of the week was to make owl paper bag puppets.

Gresham wanted them to be Great Horned Owls.  We searched for a picture online so that we could see what their features look like.

Great Horned Owl Puppets

Here’s how we made them!

Step 1:  Cut out a piece of brown construction paper as shown for the shape of the head.

Step 2:  Cut out the shape shown below for the horned head.  For a group of kids, I would make a pattern of this shape out of cardboard and let the kids trace it.

Step 3:  For the eyes, I traced coins, and the boys cut them out.  I did a quarter in black construction paper, a nickel in yellow, and a dime in black.  Then I trimmed the dime down further to make the pupil of the eye a little smaller.

Step 4:  Cut out wings in brown and a beak in black. Glue it all together, and add details with crayon!

The finished owls were so cute!  Owen showed his owl to Aidan and told him, “Look at how realistic my owl looks!”

What a great idea! And you could do it with so many different animals, especially if you got the white lunch bags. Thanks for sharing!
