Make popsicle stick star Christmas ornaments! These ornaments are a fabulous Christmas craft for kids.

The supplies could not be more simple, and yet the ornaments are fun to make and look great on the tree. They would also make great gift tags or embellishments for a gift bag or package.

Add glitter and sparkles, or just paint your stars! You can even wrap them in yarn or cover them with buttons. Just use whatever is in your craft closet!

This project was updated in December 2022.

Supplies Needed:

  • Popsicle sticks
  • Low temp hot glue gun
  • Paint – we used acrylic
  • Yarn or ribbon for hanging
  • Your choice of sequins, glitter, buttons, etc.

We used the more narrow popsicle sticks for the craft store, but wider craft sticks will work too. The stars will just have a different look.

First, assemble your stars.

If you have a low temp glue gun, kids can make these star ornaments themselves.  I think most kids age 8+ can do this on their own, but it will depend on the child.

Some of the popsicle sticks will come warped. I found that it worked best to only glue the ends of the popsicle sticks and not worry if the middle of the sticks touch or not.

After the stars are assembled, add some paint.

If you want to add glitter, wait until the paint is dry. Then cover the star with a tin layer of white craft glue. We used Elmer’s (pva glue). Sprinkle the glitter on, and then shake off the excess.

It works well to use a Q-tip for spreading the glue.

Then just add a loop or ribbon or yarn to hang the ornament!

This next one is my favorite! I decorated it with white paint and red buttons. It’s great if the buttons are a variety of sizes.

Then this star ornament has green paint and sequins. We used a low temp hot glue gun for both the buttons and sequins, but any craft glue would work as well if you want to avoid a glue gun.

You can also wrap your ornaments in yarn. We used some really thin crocheting yarn, but any yarn would work.  Tie the strand around one popsicle stick, and then start wrapping!  I tied off the ends, but my 10 year old did the rest.

We added a loop of green yarn for hanging – just thread it though one of the spaces in the yarn.

We have just done something similar with several schools (Key Stage 2) and a Christmas workshop.
We used the small rubber bands (loom bands) to tie each point then wrapped with coloured strands or used sticky gems to decorate!
All were well recieved and the kids seemed to have loads of fun with them.
