What’s almost as fun as a new backpack for back to school? An old backpack turned new with one of our favorite craft materials -duct tape!

Aidan received this backpack at his gymnastics birthday party when he turned 10. However now that he’s 11, it’s not all that cool to be seen with an “I had my birthday at ASI gymnastics” backpack – ha! So he gave his bag a makeover with duct tape. I was pretty impressed.

Here’s what it looks like flattened out. He basically just covered the entire thing in black duct tape and then added a red “A.”

Aidan has been carrying this bag for about 2 months now, and it has held up really well. We’re homeschoolers (and it’s still summer), so it hasn’t seen daily use. But he carries it to church with his Bible in it and takes it other places with books, drawing supplies, etc. inside.

If you don’t have a drawstring backpack to recover, we found inexpensive ones at Hobby Lobby near the t-shirts and other wearable crafts. I bought Gresham and Owen some plain black drawstring backpacks for about $6 each (sale price).
