This simple play mat for cars has been a favorite activity for preschoolers at our house since my oldest son was three! I am always amazed at how long a preschooler can stay busy with a homemade car mat and some vehicles.
I drew a basic design for our Hot Wheels town, and then let Jonathan (age 3) help me decide what else to add.
And just FYI – artistic skill is not needed for this project! Your preschooler will be so impressed with whatever you come up with. When Aidan was 4, he created one of these mats with a parking garage and a helicopter landing pad on it. I helped a little, but he mostly drew the whole thing himself, with markers, and it was a MESS. He played with it for hours! We finally threw it away when it was completely tattered.
We made an In-n-Out Burger, a farm, a park, Target, a bank, a post office, and a construction area. Owen and Jonathan worked very hard!
Jonathan’s farm – I had to take a picture because this was truly amazing coloring for him!
Then it was time to play!
Here is a good view of our finished mat.
Now get out some poster board and have fun!
