How to Build LEGO® Pandas!

This past weekend, my oldest son was on a trip with his grandparents, my youngest son had a cold, and the two middle sons were more quiet than usual. We dumped out the LEGO® bricks on the carpet and spent time building! I suggested a zoo. Gresham got right to work on a herpetarium (this kid loves his reptiles) and I built panda bears.

It always amazes me how much personality you can get with LEGO®!

The eyes that I used are from the LEGO® Classic tubs. We also purchased more at the brick wall at the LEGO® store.

(And if you’re looking for more animals to build, scroll down to the bottom of the post for links!)

Step 1: Start with a 4 x 2 flat brick. Attach a 2 x 3 flat brick under it as shown.

Step 2: Add a 2 x 2 flat brick on top.

Lego Pandas

Step 3: Add a black 2 x 4 flat brick, a 1 x 4 white flat brick, and a 1 x 2 white flat brick. The black will be the nose.

Lego Pandas

Step 4: Place a 1 x 4 white flat brick on the two exposed studs of the black brick. Add a 1 x 2 white brick on top of that.

Lego Pandas

Step 5: Attach two 1 x 2 white bricks – one on each side of the face.

Lego Pandas

Step 6: Build the eyes and face as shown below.

Lego Pandas

Step 7: Attach the eyes/face to the nose.

Add a flat 2 x 4 brick to the back of the head.

Step 8: Add two 1 x 3 white bricks, a 1 x 4 white brick, and two flat one stud white bricks.

Lego Pandas

Step 9: Build up the back of the head. Add a 2 x 2 white brick, a 1 x 2 white brick, and a 1 x 2 white brick on top of the square brick. (Or use a 2 x 3 white on the bottom – that would have been more efficient but I couldn’t find one!)

Lego Pandas

Step 10: Add a flat white 1 x 4 brick and a flat black 1 x 4 brick.

Lego Pandas

Step 11: Add a black flat 2 x 4 brick on top of the white and black pieces you just added. Build two white structures as shown below. These attach to the overhanging edges of the pieces just added.

And you panda’s head should now look like this: (Or similar, use whatever pieces you have!)

Step 12: Start building the body with a 4 x 8 white flat brick.

Step 13: Add white and black bricks as shown.

Lego Pandas

Step 14: Add two white 2 x 4 flat bricks. (It’s not necessary for one of the flat bricks to have holes in it – I just couldn’t find a regular one!)

Lego Pandas

Step 15: Attach the head to the body.

Lego Pandas

Step 16: Add a white 2 x 4 brick. On top of that, add two flat 1 x 4 black bricks and two flat 1 x 4 white bricks.

Lego Pandas

Step 17: Three 2 x 4 white bricks.

Lego Pandas

Step 18: Add another layer of white bricks. Use sloped 2 x 2 bricks on the pieces that hang over – this will be the tops of the legs.

Lego Pandas

Step 19: These are the pieces I used for the back end of the panda.

Lego Pandas

Assemble them as shown below:

Lego Pandas

Step 20: Build up the back a little more with white flat bricks.

Lego Pandas

Step 21: This was the hardest part to show! This is the top of the front legs. It adds width to the body of the panda, but only attaches to the front leg.

Attach this to the underside of the front leg.

Step 22: Build the legs. Each foot is a 2 x 3 flat black brick. The back legs have three black 2 x 2 bricks and the front legs have two.

Build the baby panda:

I was intending to show step-by-step instructions for the baby panda, but I had fighting boys and a toddler girl wanting lunch. So here are some close up shots, and hopefully you can figure it out from these!

Have fun building! If you build some pandas, we would love for you to share a picture on the Frugal Fun for Boys Facebook page! (And of course girls are welcome to share too – we have never intended this site to be Frugal Fun for *only* Boys, just boy-approved!)
