Do you know who Goldbug is?  Goldbug is Jonathan’s favorite character in Richard Scarry’s Cars and Trucks and Things that Go.  This is one of our very favorite preschool books!  Each page has so much to look at, and they boys enjoy choosing their favorite vehicle off each page.  They also enjoy looking for Goldbug, who is hidden on most pages.

I told Jonathan that I could make him a Goldbug out of a wooden peg that we had left over from our wooden peg ninjas.  Well, he pestered me for days until I finally made it!

Goldbug is just yellow paint on a wooden peg.  I drew on the details with a Sharpie.

Here are two fun games to play with Goldbug!

Game #1:  Hide and Seek

This one is pretty obvious.  Take turns hiding and finding Goldbug!

Do you see him?

Jonathan loved having turns hiding Goldbug.  And every single time he would hide him in a spot that I had already used, AND he announced where he had hidden Goldbug as soon as I walked back into the room!  Every time!  With a huge grin on his face!  Oh well, we’ve still got plenty of time to learn… 🙂

Game #2:  I Spy Goldbug

For this game, I set up toys in the living room.  I chose a lot of vehicles to make it similar to the scenes in the book.  We used Duplo vehicles, Fisher-Price Little People vehicles, etc.  The more toys the better!  I set up a scene and hid Goldbug in it.

Can you see him?

How about now?

Jonathan thought this was an absolute blast too!  I just love having a preschooler who is happy to be a preschooler.  Owen at this age was just focused on trying to be 10.

It would be really fun to create your own “I Spy” book with Goldbug around your house!  Take photos and print them.

What a great idea! Cars and Trucks and Things That Go is a perennial favorite here - the binding is starting to fall apart from so much love. I bet my boys will love your game. Thanks for the idea!

P.S. You say that Goldbug is hidden on most pages, but surely it's all pages? The only one that doesn't have him is the back endpaper, right?

Well, we never have found him on two pages - but now I'm going to have to go look again!!!

What size are your wooden pegs? 2.5 inch tall or 3.5 inch tall? Thanks!
