Here are two simple holiday treats that are great for kids to make and give! These simple sweets would be perfect for giving to a neighbor, a teacher, or a friend.
One of my favorite parts of the Christmas season is Hershey’s kisses. Especially the mint truffle flavored ones. I always stock up when they go on sale at the end of the season! We went shopping at Tom Thumb and discovered that Hershey’s also offers a candy cane flavor of kisses. We decided to go with a candy cane theme for our holiday baking with candy cane brownies and candy cane cookies.
While I really enjoy cooking from scratch, I also enjoy the ease of Betty Crocker baking mixes. We love the brownies. This was our first time trying the sugar cookie mix, and I have to say that I’m impressed! They were so simple to mix up, especially since I was cooking with a 6 year old, and they taste delicious.
Candy Cane Kiss Cookies
Ingredients: (Makes 18 cookies)
- 1 pouch Betty Crocker sugar cookie mix
- 1 egg
- 1/2 cup butter
- Sugar – we used plain sugar and red colored sugar
- Hershey’s Candy Cane Kisses
We mixed up the cookie dough according to the package directions – all you have to do is mix it with 1 egg and 1/2 cup softened butter. (Make sure that the butter is completely softened before mixing!)
Once the dough is mixed, form it into small balls. Roll the balls in sugar and place them on a cookie sheet.
Unwrap your Hershey’s candy cane kisses so that you will be ready to put them on the cookies the moment they come out of the oven. Gently push a kiss down in the center of each cookie.
After the first batch, we decided to try rolling the next tray in red sugar. They turned out so pretty, and I can’t decide which I like better!
Do keep in mind that the kisses melt once they are on the cookies. I think that the candy cane ones lost their shape a little more than the chocolate ones do, but they still look like kisses. Be sure to let the cookies sit for several hours after they come out of the oven so that the kiss cools completely. I had them sitting on our kitchen island, and Janie climbed up on a kitchen chair and ruined three in one grab! But they tasted yummy anyway… 🙂
Candy Cane Iced Brownies
We baked the brownies according to the package directions. When they were completely cool, I used a rolling pin to crush candy canes between two layers of parchment paper. I wasn’t sure how difficult it would be to crush them to the size pieces I wanted, but it was really easy. A child could definitely do this job!
Then I iced the brownies and sprinkled on a layer of candy cane pieces. SO delicious! I had been a little worried that the candy canes would be too crunchy, but they were perfect.
