LEGO® + Math = Fun! Here’s a great way to work on addition with a fun LEGO® twist. Print these LEGO® addition mats at the bottom of the post. Math doesn’t seem like work when you add LEGO® bricks! (I have another printable mat coming for LEGO® multiplication, so stay tuned for that one as well.)
This math activity is perfect for introducing the concept of addition because kids can really see what’s happening. Add LEGO® bricks to the top and middle boxes, and then count the bricks figure out the sum. Then kids can write the numbers in the boxes on the right.
I laminated our LEGO® addition mats so that the kids can use a wipe off marker and do the activity over and over.
Jonathan (age 5) is brand new to addition, so I just let him choose how many bricks to put in each square. Then he counted up the total and wrote the number at the bottom.
Easy peasy! Another way to approach this activity would be to keep the same number on the bottom (10, for example) and then find all the ways to make 10. Then switch out the sum at the bottom to practice number bonds for a different sum.
I made an extra mat for Janie (2, almost 3), which was a good thing because she worked so hard on hers! 🙂

Here are four math games with Magna Tiles that are perfect for 4-6 year olds.
