Remember that magnetic poetry game that you stick on your refrigerator? That was the inspiration for this Superhero Creative Writing Pack!  There are so many ways to use this resource to encourage creative writing skills in young children. This pack will increase vocabulary and encourage the use of strong verbs and descriptive language, all in the motivating context of superhero world.

This printable literacy pack includes:

  • 120+ Word Cards for building sentences and stories.
  • Parts of Speech Sorting Pages
  • Superhero themed handwriting pages in two sizes, boy and girl options.

Recommended Age:  1st/2nd Grade (age 6-8)

I printed our word cards on card stock, then laminated them.

There are word cards for made-up superhero characters (Mega Man, Galactic Girl, Captain Smash, etc.), or your kids can think of their own.

Because I could not make an unlimited number of word cards (ha!), I had to make some decisions. I chose to make all of the verbs in past tense, since that is how most stories are written. Then there was the question of what to do about starting each sentence with a capital letter.  I made both capital and lowercase versions of the (the and The), as well as capital versions of other words that are likely to be at the beginning of a sentence. Many sentences start with names, so those are taken care of.  However, to solve the issue of capitalization and any other potential problems, I included several blank word cards so that students can write the word they need.

Punctuation cards (. ! ?) are included.

I decided to add magnets to the back of our cards so that the boys could use them on our magnetic white board. It’s so fun to play with! One day I ran across my 10 year old and 8 year old working on a story together. 🙂

Beginning writers can build a sentence, and then copy it onto their paper.  (And you don’t have to hear, “How do I spell blaster? How do I spell caught?” etc. over and over! Woo hoo!)

Another fun activity is to sort the words by parts of speech.  There are pages for nouns, verbs, pronouns, adverbs, and adjectives.

My first-grader grandson loves the Superhero Writing Pack -- it's a hit!

My second-grader grandson is in a bi-lingual program and I'm wondering if you've considered a Writing Pack in Spanish. My Spanish is limited to Sesame Street, so I'm not sure whether it would work as well as the English version does.
