Here’s a whimsical project to build with LEGO® bricks – make a gnome garden! You can even build a little house in a tree trunk for your gnomes.

I don’t know why, but garden gnomes have always cracked me up. These gnomes were inspired by some that I saw on the LEGO® Facebook page back before Christmas. They were in a photo that was advertising the LEGO® Life app. Unfortunately, there were no instructions on the app (since the app consists of kids sharing their projects) and no further photos either. So I figured out my own version that is similar.

Ready to build a gnome?

Step 1: Start with a 2 x 4 brick in whatever color you’d like your gnome’s shirt to be. Add two 1 x 4 plates and a 1 x 2 plate.

Step 2: Add two 1 x 1 bricks and a 1 x 2 brick with two studs on the side (tan).

Step 3: Build the shoulders by adding two 1 x 2 x 1 1/3 bricks with a curved top.

Step 4: Add one tan 1 x 4 plate and one 1 x 4 plate in whatever color you’ve chosen for the shirt.

Step 5: Place a 2 x 4 tan plate on top.

Step 6: Add a 1 x 4 white brick, two 1 x 1 tan bricks with one stud on the side, and a 1 x 2 brick with two studs on the side.

Step 7: Gather the bricks shown for building the gnome’s face and hair.

Step 8: Attach the hair, eyes, and nose to the gnome.

Step 9: Add legs and shoes. Each leg is a 2 x 2 round brick and a 2 x 2 round plate. The shoe is a 2 x 2 brown round plate and a 1 x 2 brown plate.

Step 10: Find the bricks shown: two 1 x 1 bricks, a 2 x 2 cone, a 1 x 1 cone, and two 1 x 1 tan plates. The beard is a 2 x 4 white wedge plate (right) and a 2 x 4 white wedge plate (left).

Step 11: Add the 1 x 1 bricks to the arms, and add the 1 x 1 tan plates as hands. Attach the beard and the hat, and the gnome is complete!

Now build more gnomes in other colors!

Then build a gnome garden. We built a tree with an arched opening. You could even build a door that opens and closes, or add furniture inside the tree house!

The whole thing just makes me smile.

Have fun building!
