It’s a unicorn! And it’s so fluffy I’m gonna die! (Despicable Me reference, ha ha!)

In our boy-heavy house, no one is into unicorns, actually. Janie loves all things girly, but she is not really a fan of unicorns. Maybe she’s too young? She’s 3. We do, however, love the unicorn in Despicable Me, and I thought it would be fun to build a unicorn out of LEGO® bricks!

This LEGO® unicorn build would be perfect for a birthday party activity and favor! It wouldn’t be hard to order the pieces on Brick Link and make little kits, so I’m including a parts list with the instructions – see below.

Use whatever colors you’d like for the hair – that’s part of the fun!

This video will show you how to build the unicorn, and you can see photo instructions below, as well as a parts list.

Ready to Build One?

Parts List:

White Bricks:

1 – 2 x 6 brick

1 – 2 x 2 brick

1 – 1 x 2 brick

2 – 1 x 1 bricks with a stud on the side, headlight

2 – 1 x 1 bricks with a stud on the side

(Note – it doesn’t matter whether the 1 x 1 bricks with a stud on the side are the headlight style or not. The list reflects what is pictured.)

3 – 2 x 2 plates

1 – 2 x 3 plate

1 – 1 x 2 brick with two studs on the side

2 – 1 x 2 plates with one stud on top

1 – 1 x 2 – 2 x 2 bracket

4 – 1 x 1 round bricks

4 – 1 x 1 cones

Assorted Bricks:

4 – 1 x 1 black round plates

1 – 1 x 2 black plate

1 – 1 x 1 gold cone

1 – 1 x 2 plate in a fun color

8 – 1 x 1 slopes (30 degree) in fun colors

2 – eyes

Step 1: Gather the bricks shown for building the unicorn’s head.

Step 2: Attach a 1 x 2 brick and two 1 x 1 bricks with a stud on the side to the 2 x 3 plate. Add the eyes.

Step 3: Add the 1 x 1 bricks with a stud on the side – these will hold the nose. Place the 1 x 2 plate with one stud on top of the eyes.

Step 4: Gather the bricks shown to finish the head and build the neck.

Step 5: Place a 2 x 2 plate under the head so that it sticks out by two studs. Then attach the bracket on top of that.

Step 6: Place the 1 x 2 brick with two studs on the side on top of the bracket. Then place the 2 x 2 brick and 2 x 2 plate underneath.

Step 7: Attach the unicorn’s head to a 2 x 6 brick. Add a 1 x 2 plate with one stud on top to hold the tail. Then add a 2 x 2 plate to the unicorn’s back.

Step 8: Now for the fun part! Build a colorful mane. Then find a 1 x 2 plate in a fun color for the tail.

Step 9: Attach the mane and tail as shown.

Step 10: Build the legs. Each leg has one 1 x 1 round brick, one 1 x 1 cone, and one 1 x 1 black round plate.

Step 11: Attach the legs, and the unicorn is complete! Then build more in different colors. So fun!

Have fun building!

I loved this idea! Do you know how much will be to order the bricks?

    Thanks

It cost me $7.19 (plus S&H) through Bricklink. I put it all on a want list and they do the work of hunting the parts down for me.

Our son got a lego set for Christmas and he's run out of ideas on what to build so I saw this article through a google search and we did this yesterday - he loved it. Thank you for the detailed instructions.

Where can I order the bricks?

I would recommend ordering from the Pick-A-Brick page on Lego.com, or from Brick Link. http://bricklink.com
Brick Link is similar to eBay with many different vendors selling LEGO bricks. I hope that helps!

Hello, thank you for the cute idea. I plan on using this as an activity for my daughter's birthday, and I'm wondering if you can tell me the dimensions of the finished product? (So I can get an appropriately sized container for the girls to take home)

They are 3 inches high and 3 inches long. They don't look square - but I measured them and those are the dimensions! Good luck with your party! Sounds like fun! :-)

Hi I’m just selecting all the pieces I need for this “project” online on shop.lego.com and noticed you missed listing a 2x2 white brick. Just want to make sure nobody else misses it before ordering pieces ?. For 1 unicorn it’s estimated cost of $5 CAD. Super cute!! Thanks so much for the instructions!

Hi Sarah, I had the same problem, but didn’t notice or read this comment until after we had ordered all the bricks from LEGO for a birthday party. Fortunately we had white 2 x 2 bricks around (most people likely do), but I think you still need to edit the list of white bricks in the parts section to add (1) white 2x2 brick. Everything else worked out great.

The unicorns look adorable by the way, thanks so much! We will be building them for my daughter’s birthday party next month.

To facilitate ordering the parts on BrickLink I went ahead and created the model on their Stud.io application. You can find it model here:

    https://studio.bricklink.com/v2/build/model.page?idModel=35080

And from there it's easy enough to find stores that have all the parts you'll need.

Thank you so much for doing this - I just ordered 12 sets from the same person on brick link. I really appreciate you taking the time to do it. Previously I spent an hour myself trying to find each piece on the lego website!

Did you print off the instructions, or did you build at the party?
