Beginning Sounds Phonics Memory Game

Here’s a simple activity for learning letter sounds – create your own memory game!

I made this game for Owen out of index cards.  The cards were a little thin and I didn’t want him to be able to see through the cards when they were face down, so I folded them in half and taped the edges.  Then I created matches by writing a letter on one card and drawing a simple picture of an item that starts with that letter on another card.

I made 8 matches at first, and then expanded the game to 13 matches.  Eventually we’ll add some more, but I think the game would be too cumbersome with the entire alphabet!  You could always make the entire alphabet and rotate which matches you use for a game so that your child is able to practice all of the letter sounds.

Here are the matches I’ve done so far if you need some “easy to draw” ideas!

A – apple

B – bat and ball

C – car

D – dinosaur

F – fish

G – grapes

H – hat

K – key

L – laptop (lollypop would be easier to draw, but Gresham thought it should be a laptop – ha!)

N – ninja (I just drew the head)

R – rainbow

S – snake

T – turtle

Owen loves playing this game.  He got it out to play with Grandma when she came over, so that counts as a success in my book!

Thanks for these ideas! We've loved incorporating your "active" ways and they've been a hit. This will be fun, too. Our little guy wants to read so badly, but his brain isn't making the connection between letter sounds coming together to form words. We can still have "reading lessons" with your ideas!

My daughter and I played Memory for almost an hour today, but I never would have thought to make a phonics-type memory game. We're definitely trying this! Thanks so much for the idea!

So its just a memory game, matching the letter with the sound?

I love the easy draw ideas! Now I just need more ideas for the rest of the letters :)

Thank you so much for all the wonderful ideas you have provided for us. I am a grandma and have been watching my 3 year old grandson for almost two years. We enjoy the activities you have on your website. I could never come up with any of this. Thanks again!
