Aidan turned 9 on Sunday! It just doesn’t seem possible! Aidan’s birthday is two days before my dad’s, and so they usually celebrate together. Birthday cakes are not my thing (it was amazing that I pulled off a skateboard cake last year!), and so my mom made the cake this year. Aidan said he wanted a cake that looked like Captain America’s shield, and I told him that I was not going to ask Grandma to try to figure that out! Well, being the wonderful Grandma that she is, she made a Captain America cake!
Actually, my parents worked on it together, and they used waxed paper circles to make the icing circles on the cake. They cut out three circles out of waxed paper. The smallest paper circle was on the bottom (the blue area on the cake), then the second smallest (red), and then the third smallest (white). They held the waxed paper circles together by putting a toothpick through the center. They did the red icing on the outer circle first, then removed the largest waxed paper circle and filled in white, then removed the next one and filled in red, etc. For the star shape, my mom used a star cookie cutter and spread the icing with a toothpick.
