I posted the other day about our Christian Soldiers Club Bible time – here is Part 1 in case you missed it!
After we finished studying the armor of God, I told the boys that we were going to learn about a military commander. This immediately got their attention! We read the story of Joshua in the Catherine Vos Story Bible. (Again, this is such a great reference. This story Bible is geared toward elementary aged kids. My almost-4-year-old still requires some extra explanation. There are not a lot of pictures. However, the way that Catherine Vos tells the stories is fabulous. She preserves as much Biblical content as possible while softening issues that are a bit much for young children to deal with. She also draws connections where needed so that children can understand the story in light of all of the Bible.)
In addition to reading the story, we:
- Memorized Joshua 1:8-9.
- Learned a song that uses the text of these verses
- Built a city of Jericho with duplo legos. Then, we acted out the story with little figures. This was very helpful for my middle son, who still remembers all the details of the story to this day! In the picture above, you can see Rahab’s house on top of the wall. (Well, if you use your imagination, that is!) In building the walls, I also felt like I gained more from the Biblical account. These had to have been very thick walls to fit houses on top! How amazing it must have been to watch them fall! Also, my oldest son realized that as the Israelites walked around the walls day after day, the residents of Jericho probably became less suspecting of an attack. Then, on the final day, they would have been unprepared for battle. The scripture doesn’t say if that was the case, but it was interesting to think about!
- We talked a lot about God being our King. Joshua had to decide if he was going to follow God or do things his own way. We designed “crests” on paper shields and decorated them with Joshua 25:15 “…as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”
Again, we did not do this all on one day! I can’t remember how long this took, but it was more than a week!
I would like to find (or create) a study on the attributes of God to do with the boys in the near future. We don’t do something hands-on every day, but adding some activities to our Bible time is really helping with interest level and retaining the things taught!
