Christmas Tree Hands-On Multiplication Activity

Here’s a fun math activity that will help kids learn the concept of multiplication in a hands-on way. (If you’re looking for multiplication fact practice, I have some Christmas themed multiplication pages as well. There are even secret codes and Christmas word problems!)

This game is simple, but effective. And all you need are the Christmas tree templates and recording sheet (print from this post), some dice, and some M&M’s. If you don’t want to use food, you can grab some small buttons, beads, or something similar.

How to Play the Game

Roll two dice. Or, roll one die two times. The first roll tells you how many trees to lay out. The second roll tells you how many M&M’s (or buttons, or whatever) to put on each tree.

Rolling a 6 and then a 2 means that you’ll set out 6 trees and decorate them with 2 M&M’s on each. How many M&M’s total is that?

6 groups of 2 = 12, or 6 x 2 = 12

We laminated our recording sheet so that we can use it over and over. If you’re planning to just do this activity once, you can just write on the recording sheet.
