Today we were at my parents’ house for Mother’s Day, and I took a picture of the gift we made her for Christmas so that I could share it with you all! I should have taken photos of it before I gave it away, but I totally forgot. Maybe because I was nine months pregnant at the time? Anyway, my mom loves birds, and we saw this idea in Family Fun magazine to decorate a plain wooden birdhouse with things from nature. Aidan and I worked on it together, and we were very happy with the way it turned out!
- A wooden birdhouse – we got ours for around $4 at Hobby Lobby
- Acrylic paint to cover the whole birdhouse as a base color
- Tacky glue
- Pine cones, rocks, etc. to decorate the house
- Fake birds – also from Hobby Lobby
First, Aidan painted the whole thing a cream color with acrylic paint.
To make the shingles, I used some old scissors to cut apart pine cones that we gathered from my parents’ yard. The roof was the time-consuming part. I glued on each shingle one at a time with tacky glue. But, as I mentioned before, I was nine months pregnant, and it was great to just sit and watch a movie while I glued! It was worth the trouble because it really gave the birdhouse some personality.
We glued some vase filler rocks around the bottom edge with more tacky glue. It takes a while to dry, but seemed to hold the rocks on just fine. We also glued on fake grass between the rocks to add some color.
Aidan picked out two birds at the store to sit on the birdhouse. The green bird has a metal clip at the bottom, so it hooks onto the post sticking out of the birdhouse door.
This would make a great Mother’s Day gift, but I guess I’m posting a little late for that, huh? Oh well, there’s always next year!
