These alphabet learning activities require very little preparation, and my preschoolers loved them!

For each of these games, we used a alphabet chart that I made out of a square piece of poster board. Super simple. I chose to do capital letters on the chart because they are easier for young kids to write and to visually discriminate from one another, but I know that some prefer to teach the lower case letters first. You can totally make the chart either way!Four Simple Alphabet Games for Preschoolers to Learn the Letters

Game #1: Letter Match

This is a simple game for beginners. I made small slips of paper with all of the letters on them, and Jonathan simply matched them up! He can do this game completely independently, and it’s nice to have a few activities like that.

Jonathan can only identify 7 letters at this point, so the game was interesting to him just the way it was. Once your child knows most of the alphabet, try having them match up lower case letters to capital letters.

Game #2: Roll a Letter

For this game, all you need is the alphabet chart and one die! Each player takes turns rolling the die onto the board and then saying the name of the letter that it landed on. Well, if it landed on one at all… my preschoolers had trouble keeping it on the board, but that just added to the fun of the game! Preschoolers love dice. There is no winner in this game. Just play until your child is tired of practicing! Another variation is to say the sound of the letter that you land on.

Game #3: Letter Sounds Match Up

Interestingly enough, this was Jonathan’s favorite game. I have posted before that he has been slow to learn the letters, although he taught himself the numbers. After realizing that he needs to associate the letters with meaning in order to remember them (as in, the sound they make) I have been working on letter sounds even though he doesn’t recognize all the letters yet.

I collected a little box of items to match up to the letter they start with.

Jonathan is still new at this, so we did them together.

We did d-d-d-dart and b-b-b-bus and s-s-s-screwdriver… We just did a few letters to match the length of Jonathan’s attention span. It would be fun to make a collection of items for each letter of the alphabet!

Game #4: Cover a Letter

Call out a letter and have your child cover that letter. We used math counting cubes.

That’s Janie collecting all the purple ones, because she has decided that purple is her favorite color. (Who has a favorite color already at two years old? None of the boys did!)

Then she decided to walk through the game, on top of her blankie. And learning time was over! Just keeping it real… 🙂
