Here’s a fun fall LEGO® project! Build some friendly jack o’lantern faces out of bricks and then illuminate them with battery powered tea lights.

There are several ways to design the face! Kids will enjoy giving this project their own personal touch. I have included a parts list at the bottom of the post, but encourage kids to be creative. If you don’t have that many orange bricks, it’s really fine to use any color or mix of colors.

Kids can build a door on the back for the lanterns so that it’s easy to turn the tea light on and off.

Such cute little faces! The curved bricks really make the mouths look good – I have details below on what bricks are needed to build these.

Turn off the lights and watch them glow! Your pumpkin lanterns will make a fall evening more cheery.

Ready to Build a Pumpkin Lantern?

I’ll share the instructions first, and then at the bottom of the post there is a list of the bricks needed in case you want to order parts for this project from Lego.com or Brick Link.

Step 1: Grab a 6 x 6 orange plate, eight 2 x 2 inverted slopes, and four 2 x 2 inverted slopes (double convex) for the corners.

Step 2: Place two 2 x 2 inverted slopes on each side of the 6 x 6 plate.

Step 3: Place the 2 x 2 double convex inverted slopes on each corner.

Step 4: Add a layer of plates on three of the sides. There are four 1 x 4 plates and two 1 x 2 plates.

Step 5: Start building the face by adding a 1 x 3 x 2 inverted arch on each side. Then place a 1 x 2 brick in the middle to make teeth. (The other face has a 1 x 1 brick and a 1 x 1 tile instead.)

Step 6: Add two rows of bricks on each side. Each side has a 1 x 3 brick, a 1 x 4 brick, a 1 x 1 brick, and a 1 x 6 brick.

Step 7: Build the top of the mouth with two 1 x 4 plates and two 1 x 1 bricks. (A 1 x 8 plate would be better, but we didn’t have one!)

Step 8: Add a row of bricks on all three sides. Then add a 1 x 2 slope, a 1 x 1 brick, another 1 x 2 slope, and a 1 x 2 brick.

Step 9: Add a 1 x 2 inverted slope, a 1 x 1 brick, another 1 x 2 inverted slope, and another 1 x 1 brick.

Step 10: Fill in the sides by adding two rows of bricks. I used two 1 x 6 bricks, a 1 x 1 brick, a 1 x 2 brick, and two 1 x 4 bricks.

Step 11: Cover the top of the pumpkin with a 6 x 6 plate, a 2 x 6 plate, and two 2 x 4 plates. Then add a 1 x 2 light gray plate with a handle, which will hold the door. Place a 2 x 3 plate right in front of that.

Step 12: Place two 2 x 4 plates on top of the 1 x 2 light gray plate to secure it.

Step 13: Finish off the top of the pumpkin by adding one 2 x 4 brick and and eight 2 x 3 slopes. Add a 2 x 2 lime green round brick for a stem.

Step 14: Build the door by attaching a 1 x 2 light gray plate with two clips to a 6 x 6 plate.

Step 15: Attach the door, and you’re ready to add your battery powered tea light!

This should go without saying, but don’t use a real candle. The battery powered tea lights don’t get hot, so they will be completely safe to use.

Another option is to build the pumpkin without the door. Just build walls on each side. It’s a little harder to take the tea light in and out to turn it on and off, but you’ll only need one 6 x 6 plate instead of three. Also, more light shows through the top of the lantern. You can see this in the photo at the top of the post.
