"It Looked Like Spilt Milk" Cloud Shapes Craft for Preschoolers

The book It Looked Like Spilt Milk by Charles Shaw holds a special place in my heart. One of my college professors introduced us to this book in our Foundations of Teaching Reading class. That professor and that class were instrumental in turning me on to teaching and to quality children’s literature. So when we found It Looked Like Spilt Milk at the library last week, we had to check it out!

This book is great for beginning readers because of its predictable text. Toddlers love it for the same reason. Each page features a white shape on a solid blue background. The story says, “Sometimes it looked like a ______, (bird, tree, etc.) but it wasn’t a _________.” Children are left wondering until the last page when the book reveals that they are clouds!

After we read the book, we made some clouds out of cotton balls.

Jonathan (age 2) enjoyed exploring the texture of the cotton balls and glue.

Owen (4.5) enjoyed shaping his cloud into a ninja (his choice!). He discovered that he could pull the cotton balls apart to make them longer and thinner. He used a Q-tip for spreading the glue.

Sometimes it looked like a ninja, but it wasn’t a ninja! It was just a cloud in the sky.
