One of Aidan’s favorite activities on a winter evening is to get out the card table and play with magnets and paper clips! The card table is fun because the top is thin enough that you can move paper clips around on the table by moving a magnet underneath the table. We also like to create paper people, etc. to attach to the paper clips – then we can move our figures around on the table using magnets!
These are really not the greatest pictures – the black card table was not a good background…
We have these rectangle shaped magnets – I bought a set of 10 back when I taught science. They are very strong!
Dad made some “soccer players” out of index cards. To make them stand up, we bent some large paperclips so that they made a 90 degree angle. Then, we taped the index card guys to the paper clips.
Dad and Aidan had fun making their guys kick a bouncy ball around the table!
There are lots of things you can make for this game – one time, I made a paper dog house with a little dog that could go in and out of the dog house using the magnet. But if you don’t like to draw (or your kids don’t!) you can kill a lot of time just moving paper clips or other magnetic objects around! Magnets are a lot of fun!
…Just be sure that your kids don’t put them near the computer or TV screen. Just sayin’…
