Well, you know we’ve been into painted rocks lately.  They are just so much fun!  Here’s a fun idea for Valentine’s Day painted rocks, and there are even printable Valentine cards to go with them.  Kids will enjoy making these and giving them to friends, and as an added bonus they are candy-free!

As usual, we used beach pebbles from the lawn and garden section at Home Depot and acrylic paint.

I totally recommend drawing the hearts with a pencil first before painting.  I used a Sharpie for the outlining, although I do think the Sharpies are never the same again after drawing on acrylic paint.  If anyone knows of a marker that would work for writing on top of paint (once the paint is dry, of course), please leave a comment and let me know!

The dots on the hearts were done with paint and a teeny tiny brush.

One more tip – I used white paint and red paint and mixed them to get the pink.  If you mix your red and white rather than using a bottle of pink paint, it ensures that your colors will go together nicely.

I definitely recommend printing the Valentines on card stock.  There are two designs – “Valentine, You Rock!” and “Have a Rockin’ Valentines Day!”

I’m sorry to say that I don’t have any brilliant ideas for attaching the painted rocks to the cards.  Washi tape might work, but you’ll need to test to make sure it won’t take the paint off the rocks.  We will probably just slide a card and a rock into a ziplock bag.  Another option is for kids to head to school with a stack of cards and a bag of painted rocks and just hand them out that way.

Thank you so much for sharing the valentine rock printable. You can maybe use the glue dots to attach rocks to the card or possibly double sided mild strength acid free foam. I use the fine tip oil paint markers from sharpie to draw on my rocks after they are painted.

Hi Sarah. I use Posca pens for rock painting! They layer well and dry quickly!

We use acrylic paint pens and they’re fantastic for little ones who don’t have as much control with a brush.

I use the other end of the paintbrush to make dots by dipping it in paint and dotting where wanted. Practice on paper to decide which brush end will give you the result you want.
