Here’s a fun kids craft idea – turn a paper plate into an adorable owl craft! We made ours into door hangers, but you can do whatever you like with them. Try adding a magnet to the back and displaying your owls on the refrigerator!

If you’ve followed us for any length of time, you know that we love owls and owl crafts, such as our wood slice owls and painted rock owls. Owls always feel like fall to me, but this craft is great for any time of the year. Might be fun to do during a science unit about birds.

Paper Plate Owl Craft with construction paper eyes, beak, and feet

Supplies Needed

The materials for this owl craft for kids are so simple!

  • Paper plates – uncoated basic plates
  • Paint – we used acrylic
  • Construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Ribbon for hanging – optional
  • Glue – Tacky Glue or hot glue

You will want to find the cheapest, most basic paper plates possible. Seriously! My husband brought home some from Kroger that were just too high quality and wouldn’t fold, so I stopped by Walmart where I found some very cheap uncoated paper plates that were perfect. Ha! Coated plates (the shiny ones) are nicer to eat off of, but paint does not adhere to them quite as well.

Instructions:

Step 1: Fold both sides of the plate in toward the center.

Step 2: Then fold over the top of the plate to make the owl’s head.

Step 3: Now it’s time to paint. Open up the plate and paint the inside – just the area shown.

Let it dry. Then fold the plate again and paint the head and wings.

Step 4: Use either hot glue or Tacky Glue to glue the wings and head down. Then paint feathers on the body. For younger kids, the feathers can be larger. There’s no wrong way to do this!

Step 5: Cut out the eyes, beak, and feet from construction paper.

TIP: Plastic caps are perfect when you need to draw a nice, round circle! I like to save plastic caps in a variety of sizes for crafting.

Step 6: Glue the eyes, beak, and feet to the owl’s body, and your owl craft is complete!

You may want to add some ribbon to make your owl a door hanger. It’s such a fun way to display the owls!

I will do the craft with the children at the library and use crayons so the kids won't make a mess. With crayons the owl looks good.

I will do these owls with my Dementia residents. They will love these and easy enough that they will enjoy them and not be frustrated. Thank you for the idea.
