Pizza shop pretend play meets fine motor skills in this fun activity for preschoolers! This project requires very little preparation, and it kept my 2 and 4 year olds happy and busy for a long time while their older brothers did their school work. I count that to be a total win!
Scissors Salad
It started last week with making a scissors salad. Janie and Jonathan loved cutting up green, red, and orange paper strips to make a “salad!” I got this idea from a post on scissor skills on Kindergarten Works.
They played with their salads all morning! Jonathan pretended that the white paper was ranch dressing, his favorite. They brought down silverware from the play kitchen and served their salads to everyone.
Pizza Shop Cutting Practice
So this week I decided that we would do another pretend play scissor activity and make PIZZAS!
I traced a large plate and cut circles out of poster board. Then I added red crayons for coloring the sauce, and strips of paper for cutting out cheese and toppings.
Jonathan and Janie loved every step of this activity! First, they colored the sauce. Then they cut up strips of white paper to be cheese and glued the pieces to the pizzas. They both LOVE glue sticks, so that was fun!
Here is Jonathan’s finished pizza. He said that he was putting on LOTS of pepperoni (red) and the brown is beef and the green is green pepper, which he doesn’t like but thought the green looked nice.
After the generous amounts of glue dried on the pizzas, I decided to make them a pizza oven. If you an avid Amazon Prime shopper, simply head to your cardboard box stash and choose a wide and flat one (ahem)! I taped the top of the box shut, and then cut a flap on the side with a utility knife. I added a duct tape handle so that they can open and close the door.
I cut out a cardboard circle to be a pizza pan.
Then at some point I used scissors to cut the pizzas into slices so that the kids could serve them on paper plates.
So much fun! If your kids are a little older, you could add creating menus and placemats to this activity for a little writing practice. Hopefully I’ll have more simple preschool activities to share in the coming weeks – our days go SO much better when these two have something productive to do!
