We have been having so much fun creating works of art by tracing simple geometric shapes! It’s quite relaxing, actually.
It all started with tracing one of our Keva plank blocks and coloring in the spaces, like this:
(There isn’t any reason why it would need to be a Keva block – trace whatever you have!)
The picture above is Aidan’s art (age 10, almost 11). He was very careful to use a different color for each section.
I decided to try one with black outlines, and we both liked the result.
Gresham (age 7) made his with patterns inside the shapes. He worked very hard getting it just right.
Another day, we decided to experiment with different shapes. We cut shapes out of cardboard to trace. Here is Aidan’s triangle art:
And I did circles:
Then I thought it would be fun to explore what patterns you can make if you rotate a geometric shape around a single point.
I traced sets of two triangles across from each other…
…and kept going until I had this pattern:
Aidan made one too.
This activity was very calming for all the kids, and I enjoyed creating art with them!
Notes: Aidan (almost 11) was able to trace the shapes with no problem. Gresham (age 7.5) did pretty well. It was a good skill for him to practice. He had to erase a few times, but wasn’t frustrated. Owen (age 5) had a hard time tracing, but it was good for him to try!
Owen really enjoyed just coloring designs that I made for him, so I decided to make some printable coloring pages for this post! If your kids are old enough, I would highly recommend letting them try their own tracing first. It’s so fun to experiment with shapes and see how the design turns out! All ages should enjoy the coloring pages. It might be fun to color the same design more than once with different patterns of colors. The coloring pages are hand-drawn, so they are not perfect.

So cool! This goes perfectly with what we did today (and will post about sometime tomorrow). Have you seen the circle project at http://tinyrottenpeanuts.com/zentangle/ ? It would be a nice extension of this as well.

My 4 year-old loves these sheets SO much!!!! He asks for a "circle coloring sheet" at least a couple of times a week. Thanks so much!
