Here’s an adorable butterfly craft that kids will love! Use cupcake liners and a few other simple craft supplies to make bright and colorful butterflies.

This is a perfect spring or summer craft! You can even add magnets to the back of your butterflies and stick them on the fridge. I would recommend this craft for ages 8 and up, but younger kids will also enjoy this with help.

Cupcake Liner Butterflies

My 7 year old daughter and I made two different types of butterflies. For some, we used colorful cupcake liners and then glued on buttons for decoration. Then for the others, we used plain white cupcake liners and painted them with watercolors. Both options turned out so cute!

Ready to make your own Cupcake Liner Butterfly Craft?

Supplies Needed:

  • Cupcake liners – solid white, or fun colors
  • Craft sticks
  • Pipe cleaners
  • Googly eyes
  • Buttons
  • Watercolor paints
  • Paint for the craft sticks – we used acrylic
  • Craft glue – either hot glue or Tacky Glue
  • Red or black paint pen for the mouth
  • Scissors

Step 1: First, cut out wings from the cupcake liners. We made the top pair of wings larger than the bottom pair.

Step 2: Paint a craft stick a solid color for the body.

Step 3: Cut segments from the pipe cleaners, about 2 inches long. Curl the ends to make antennas.

Step 4: Glue the wings to the back of the craft stick. Glue the antennas to the back of the craft stick. Then glue on the eyes and draw a mouth with a paint pen. Decorate your butterfly’s wings with buttons. Sequins would work really well also!

If you want to try the watercolor version, you’ll need to allow plenty of time for the paint to dry.

When we tried this, it seemed like the watercolors were just pooling/running off the cupcake liners. However, they ended up drying really great after about an hour or so! So we made more of them. The colors are so pretty!

Assemble the watercolor butterflies in the same way as the button butterflies.
