This fun toy is so simple to put together! We have all been enjoying playing with these magnetic eggs.

Here’s what I used to make them:
- Ceramic Magnets
- Modeling Clay (non-hardening)
- Plastic Easter Eggs
Each egg has a magnet in both ends, and then I stuck a blob of modeling clay on top of the magnet to hold it in place. It worked really well.
You will want to make sure to get ceramic magnets. Little weak craft magnets (like the ones that say flexible magnets) are not strong enough to attract each other through the plastic eggs. I bought these at Michael’s.
I tried to arrange the poles of the magnets so that opposite ends of the eggs would attract, but it didn’t exactly work out that way. I quickly realized that disc magnets have one pole on the flat sides and the other pole goes around the circumference. Here’s an article that explains magnetic fields if you’re interested. So what we ended up with was eggs that mostly behave with opposites attracting and like sides repelling each other. But if you have more than one of them in a line, the magnetic field seems to change somewhat and like sides might attract. All in all, they are very fun to play with!
I thought about taping them shut, but even a thin strip of duct tape kind of made a mess. We just keep them out of reach of our toddler, and they boys know not to open them.
If you play with the eggs on the table, they naturally lay down on their sides since they have a weight in each end. Unlike our wobble eggs that pop back up, they will roll over and over – end to end! But put them on a cookie sheet, and they stand up with their ends sticking to the sheet.
Have fun playing!
