Make an Indoor Spy Obstacle Course

We’ve been working on all kinds of spy themed activities for kids, and I’m so excited to show you this obstacle course! This spy obstacle course is fun to set up at home with your family (maybe as a rainy day activity), and it would also be super fun to do as part of a spy birthday party or a cousins camp. So many possibilities.

At the bottom of this post, you’ll find a link to print the signs for each station and a master supply list. The obstacle course just requires simple materials. So you’ll just need to grab a few basic supplies, print your signs, and you’ll be ready to set it up!

I would recommend the activities in this spy obstacle course for ages 5-9. Most 4 year old’s would love this as well! My 11 year old thought he was a little too big for this, but the 6 and 8 year olds loved it.

Who’s ready for a spy adventure?

Station 1: Find a Secret Code

This station involves using a black light to find a secret code.

Not all of the post-it notes have a code on them, only a FEW of them! So kids have to shine the light and hunt for a code.

We wrote the “codes” using these invisible ink pens from Amazon. These pens are super fun and will keep kids busy a long time! One end of the pen writes in invisible ink, and the other end has a little UV flashlight that shows the ink.

We used our black light flashlight for this, but it totally works to just use the light that is built in on the pens.

Station 2: Input Your Code

Next, kids will input their code by stepping on the number sequence that they see on their card.

We made the number keypad by drawing rectangles on two sheets of white poster board.

Station 3: Follow the Footprints

We used the footprints to guide the kids to the far end of our school room table. It worked well!

The footprints are made out of black construction paper. I made a pattern by tracing one of my converse shoes onto a piece of cereal box cardboard. I drew a line to separate the heel from the rest of the shoe so that they look like men’s dress shoe footprints.

I glued the black footprints to white cardstock and then cut around the outline of the footprint. Then I laminated them so that we can use them again in the future.

We taped the footprints to the floor with masking tape.

Station 4: Spy School Agility Training

The challenge here is to crawl underneath the balloons without touching any of them!

We used yarn and masking tape to attach the balloons to the underside of the table. Our puppy thought this game was great fun, so we had to remove him from the room! Ha!

The kids really enjoyed this station!

Station 5: Crawl through the Tunnel of Darkness

Okay, so it’s the “tunnel of cardboard, chairs, and a sheet,” but it was fun! This was probably the favorite station.

It you want it to be truly dark, it would be fun to combine more than one cardboard box to make a longer tunnel.

Station 6: Spy School Target Practice

We needed a station that would take the kids up the stairs, and our 13 year old suggested Nerf. It was perfect!

Station 7: Avoid the Lasers

No spy obstacle course would be complete without a yarn laser maze! We used masking tape to attach the yarn to the walls.

We used our upstairs hall, which has a half-wall on one side. If we do it again, I will use a hall that has full size walls. It would have been fun to go up higher with the yarn.

I saw several laser mazes on Pinterest that used crepe paper. I chose yarn because it’s more durable, and I was very happy with that choice!
