Last week, I did a shape unit for Owen’s preschool time.  This was so simple, and a lot of fun.  After the previous week where I never got around to planning any preschool for Owen, it was obvious that doing a few themed activities with him was actually helping.  A LOT.  He does a better job of entertaining himself when he has also spent some time doing some interesting school activities.

First, we read Mouse Shapes by Ellen Stoll Walsh.

Mouse Shapes

Then, Owen and I made some of the mice from the book.  I did all of the cutting, and he did most of the gluing.  He LOVES to glue.  And he loves to have something to show Daddy when he gets home from work!

Shape Memory Game

Then I had a spur-of-the-moment idea to make a memory game with shapes.  I made some quick game cards:

And then I put Aidan to work playing the memory game with Owen while I made lunch.  I told Aidan to have Owen name the shapes as he turned them over.

Geoboard Play

Our last activity was to play with rubber bands on the geoboard.  This was a first for Owen, and he had a lot of fun!

More Shape Ideas:
  • Build with blocks
  • Cut out playdough shapes with cookie cutters
  • Make cardboard cut-out shapes for tracing practice
  • Go through the house and look for shapes – rectangle picture frames, etc.
