Teaching kids to treasure God's Word

Over the past couple of weeks, the boys and I have been working on memorizing Proverbs 2:1-11 during our morning Bible time.

The first 6 verses of Proverbs chapter 2 say:

“My son, if you will receive my words

And treasure my commandments within you,

Make your ear attentive to wisdom,

Incline your heart to understanding;

For if you cry for discernment,

Lift your voice for understanding;

If you seek her as silver

And search for her as for hidden treasures;

Then you will discern the fear of the LORD

And discover the knowledge of God.

For the LORD gives wisdom;

From His mouth come knowledge and understanding.”

Proverbs 2:1-6

As we were reciting these words together, I was thinking about how much I long for my boys to treasure God’s Word! I had an idea for an object lesson. We purchased some wooden treasure boxes from the craft store, and I let the boys paint them however they wanted. Then, I told them that we were going to fill their treasure boxes with their favorite verses from the Bible to remind ourselves that God wants us to treasure His word. His word is truly more valuable than jewels or gold or anything that we might value!

Aidan told me while we were making them, “This was really a great idea, Mom!” I was pleasantly surprised with how much the boys liked this idea!

We have been adding verses each day – one or two for each child after Bible time in the morning.

Teaching kids to seek God's Word as for hidden treasure

It has been such a joy to see the boys flipping through their Bibles and Awana books to find their favorite verses to write out for their treasure boxes. And as they put the words of these verses in their hearts as well as in their treasure boxes, my prayer is that God will impact their hearts in His perfect timing with the truth of His word and how much of a treasure it truly is!

    We love Seeds Family Worship CDs to memorize scripture. The songs are great, we listen in the car and sing them together before bedtime. You can listen to them online, download them for around .99 each or buy CDs which come with one for you and one to give away. They also have printable cards but you could use them for copy work too. Thanks for all of your great ideas!

      We love Seeds also!! I like the fact that the songs are pleasant for parents too and don't just sound like "kids" music. Good suggestion!

    I teach Sunday School every Sunday (K-6th grade). I'm taking my class through the Bible. We started in Genesis and we are up to Proverbs 2. Love the treasure box idea and am using it with my class tomorrow. I'm a collector and a long time teacher and have a big section of beads and jewels, so we are going to glue them to our boxes instead of paint them. Thank you for this wonderful idea. I was not familiar with the
    Seeds Family Worship cds so thank you for the person that shared that. I will definitely be checking that out.

    Oh my I love this idea. I am going to include it with my Awana training sessions in the future. I can't wait to use it my own children's program at church as well! Love all your ideas!
