Use ChatGPT to make custom coloring pages by turning your own photos into coloring sheets!

This is a super fun activity for kids and even teens or adults haha. It’s so fun to color your own pets, a picture of your home, vacation memories, and even family members.

I’ll show you how we made our coloring pages, and I’ll also give you some tips for working with ChatGPT’s quirks. It definitely makes some weird decisions at times!

What kind of photos make good coloring pages?

This is an important question to answer!

The first photo that we tried to turn into a coloring page was a picture of our dogs, and it turned out well.

I uploaded the photo below to ChatGPT and typed, “Make this image a coloring page.” Notice the quirks though… ChatGPT does not just turn the lines into your photo into the lines of a coloring page. It makes its own “decisions.” Notice that it decided that we needed another food dish! I mean, I guess that’s only fair for the dogs?

It nailed the dogs though! So adorable!

ChatGPT did a great job with our dogs, but it doesn’t seem to do so well with people. Check out the coloring page of my son on his horse…

We’ve all had a good laugh about what ChatGPT did to Jonathan’s nose and mouth! Is that a mustache? We have no idea.

However, this picture of Janie holding her favorite rooster turned out great! It really looks like her.

This coloring page of our horse Brie is my favorite. I’m working on making a set of ranch coloring pages for our ranch school kids. They will love coloring their favorite horses as well as our chickens and bunnies!

ChatGPT Coloring Page Tips and Tricks:

• Photos of pets work better than photos of people.
• Landscapes work great.
• A photo with one main subject and not a lot of depth seems to work well.
• You can ask ChatGPT to change something about your coloring page, but it will also make additional changes that you didn’t ask for. For example, I asked it to remove my daughter’s leg from the photo with the dogs, and it did so, but it also changed the dogs. We liked the original version better.
• If you’re using the free version of ChatGPT, you can only make so many of these in a day. It stopped me after 4. So if you need a lot of coloring pages, plan to make to make them over the course of a few days.
• And last, but maybe the most important… it takes a few minutes for ChatGPT to make your coloring page. Depending on the time of day, it can take anywhere from 2 minutes to 30 minutes or more. You can have ChatGPT notify you when your image is ready if you prefer!

Overall, this is such a fun activity!!!

A note about AI…

I actually have many concerns about AI in general. As a content creator, I’m concerned about the fact that AI plagiarizes content written by real people in order to answer questions or make things that people ask for. I’m also concerned for our society in general and the deterioration of thinking skills as a result of relying on devices to do everything for us. And then there’s the fact that AI sometimes generates false or misleading information.

Use ChatGPT and other AI as a tool, but teach your kids to memorize important information (rather than looking up every little thing), to analyze, and to think for themselves!
