Printable Writing Task Cards for 4th – 6th Grade
Are you wanting to help your child or your students improve their writing skills? Would you like to see them writing more complex sentences with vivid descriptions and strong verbs?
I designed these writing task cards for my 5th and 7th graders. Writing is not a favorite subject for either one of them, and they tend to use short, choppy sentences and simple vocabulary.
These writing task cards are perfect for strengthening sentence and paragraph writing skills. The activities are designed to get kids thinking creatively and writing longer, more in-depth sentences and paragraphs.
The activities on this cards are, in part, inspired by the concepts in the book Paragraphs for Middle School. I highly recommend purchasing this resource if you are teaching middle schoolers. I’m using the book with Jonathan as part of his 7th grade curriculum. It’s a workbook, but we prefer to use our own paper.
Paragraphs for Middle School teaches students to write stronger sentences and better paragraphs by having them imitate the complex sentence structures that real authors use. The book teaches how to use compound subjects, compound predicates, a subject-verb split, and more tools for writing interesting sentences. Throughout the book, students will encounter sentences and excerpts from literature that they can relate to such as Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Hunger Games, and more.
How to Use the Writing Task Cards
There are 36 cards to print.
Some of the activity cards ask students to explore with language! Try writing a sentence in different ways.
Other cards have a SUPER simple paragraph to re-write in more complex sentences.
Then some of the cards ask students to edit a sentence for grammar and punctuation.
These cards can be done at home, but they also make an excellent classroom activity. Sharing writing and discussing together can really help inspire students and show reluctant writers what’s possible.
We are currently using 1 – 2 of these cards as a warm up for our language arts time a few days per week.
If you do 3 – 4 cards per week, this will be a 9 week supply of activities.
