Gresham turned 9 last week and since this was not a “party year” (we only do parties with friends when the kids turn 5 and 10), we planned to do dinner on his birthday with the grandparents and some family friends. With the new Peanuts Movie coming out on November 6, we decided to do a Peanuts themed birthday party. The boys have always loved the Peanuts characters. It’s a tradition every year to watch the Peanuts Thanksgiving special from “This is America, Charlie Brown” – we actually have it on VHS, recorded from TV in maybe 1988? The tape still works, and the commercials are a riot!

For the party we made “Woodstock’s Snack Mix” with Horizon cheese sandwich crackers, Crispix cereal, raisins, and pretzels.

It turned out really cute!

My mom made the cake (because of my history of bad birthday cakes… ahem) and we topped it with some plastic Peanuts characters that we found at the store.

The kids enjoyed drinking out of “Charlie Brown cups.” I bought plain yellow paper cups and decorated them with a black Sharpie. I had thought about using black duct tape, but I was afraid it would be too hard to get it to lie flat with the taper of the cup. So I tried drawing on the zig zag pattern, and it turned out pretty cute! I found that if you draw one zig zag line all the way around, it’s easier to add the second line underneath and then color it in. Thankfully, Peanuts is a hand drawn look, so the zig zag doesn’t have to be perfect.

We also made “Pig Pen’s Dirt Cups” with Snack Pack pudding cups and crushed up Oreo cookies.

Gresham thought that we should take the creme out of the Oreos before crushing them, and I do think they turned out better that way. More like dirt. We put the Oreos in between layers of parchment paper and crushed them with a rolling pin.

Right now you can get a free Peanuts Trick-or-Treat bag with the purchase of three participating items at Albertsons Safeway stores (Albertsons and Tom Thumb here in north Texas). We gave Gresham the bag and a soft stuffed Snoopy, and they looked adorable as decorations as well!
