These simple bath bombs are made with baking soda, citric acid, and oil. I followed the recipe on Fun at Home with Kids, and it worked really well. I made 8 times the recipe, which made 8 dinosaur eggs.

I formed the eggs around our Safari TOOB dinosaurs.

For coloring, I used Wilton brown gel food coloring. It didn’t mix at all with the other ingredients, which is why these bath bombs have kind of a speckled look! I mixed up the bath bombs in two batches. When I mixed up my second batch, I tried mixing the gel food coloring with a teaspoon of water first. This worked better for creating a more uniform color, but I ended up liking the speckled look of the original ones the best. The photo below shows two of each kind.

The weather was nice, so we set up our dinosaur egg hatching area outside on the back porch. To activate the eggs, simply place them in water. They will immediately start to bubble and fizz.

I was hoping that the eggs would not dissolve too quickly – I wanted this to last awhile after going to the trouble of making them! Each egg took several minutes to dissolve, which was perfect.

The food coloring turned the water brown as the eggs hatched, but we didn’t have any trouble with it staining hands.

It was so fun to watch the dinosaurs emerge from their eggs! The reaction between the baking soda and citric acid is an endothermic reaction, so the eggs (and the water) feel cold to the touch. So cool!

After the dinosaurs had hatched, they were reunited with their dino parents. When all the eggs were gone, the boys enjoyed playing in their “dinosaur swamp” for a long time on the back porch!
