Make crayons in the shape of LEGO® mini figures!  This is a fun craft project for kids, and the crayons also make great party favors, etc.

It was hot this week in Texas.  HOT.  We took advantage of the hot sun by making some LEGO® crayons – outside in the heat!  If you are not experiencing hot weather where you live, you can easily make this fun craft in your oven.

We had an afternoon this week where I needed to get some things done, and Owen was restlessly wandering around the house bothering people.  So I put him to work peeling broken crayons!  Then he pounded them with a hammer to get them into smaller pieces.  He thought that the process was very fun!

We used one of our LEGO minifigure molds (affiliate link) to make the crayons.  Be aware that you might not want to use it again for food once you melt crayons in it!  I was able to get ours clean with hot water, but it still smells like crayons.  We have three of these, so I will just keep this one for non-food projects.

After our crayons had melted for awhile (about 30 minutes outside – the temperature was 102!) we checked on them and realized that the molds were not full enough.  Once the crayons melt, they fill in the cracks and you may need to add more pieces to fill the mold.

If you’re making these in the oven, you can heat them for 10 minutes or so at 250 degrees.  It doesn’t have to be exact – just watch for the crayons to be melted.  Be careful when you take them out of the oven.  The wax gets very runny and will drip everywhere if you tilt the molds!

We cooled ours in the refrigerator so that they would harden more quickly.  The crayons popped easily out of the molds!  Then Owen tried coloring with them.  With all the different colors we used, the crayons write in different colors depending on which end you use.

Janie thought the LEGO® crayons were so neat when she found them on the kitchen counter after her nap!  She was busy for a long time lining them up on the counter and then loading them in and out of my measuring cups while I was cooking dinner.

Not bad for a project that didn’t cost us anything!

I made some of these with my kids (except without the cool Lego mold!), and we built a solar oven to melt the crayons in. It worked great. The solar oven was just a cardboard box with tin foil taped on the inside. It was a lot of fun. I'll probably do it again when my kids are old enough to appreciate what it means to adjust the position of the oven to follow the sun.

I’m impressed, I must say. Actually rarely must i encounter a blog that’s both educative and entertaining, and without a doubt, you may have hit the nail within the head. Your thought is outstanding; the catch is something that insufficient folks are speaking intelligently about. I’m very happy i always came across this around my hunt for something about it.
