Here’s a fun color matching activity for young preschoolers that is so simple to set up! We are using this game as one of the many things up my sleeve for keeping Janie (age 2) and Jonathan (age 4) busy while we are doing homeschooling.

For this preschool activity, all you need is some craft sticks (we used the jumbo size – they are wider), Sharpie markers, and a poster board.

Simply color the ends of the craft sticks in a variety of colors!

There are several ways to play with these. You can deal them out and play with them like you would play a game of dominos. Or preschoolers can build long “snakes” by matching up the colors.

Janie did not get the idea at first. You can see in the picture above that she is adding the wrong color onto my snake – ha! It doesn’t really matter at her age. This is just a fun hands-on activity to explore!

Jonathan was very serious about teaching her the right way to do it. He was sweet about it though, so it was all good.

I also made a quick color poster to go with the dominos. For the poster, all I did was draw circles with the same color of Sharpies. Super easy!

Since there are two colors on each domino, the kids can simply match them up with the color on the poster that matches with the color on either end.

Owen (age 7) came up with some interesting ideas too – building shapes by matching up colors. I thought this was pretty cool!

Or you can make a shape like this! They really are a fun building toy.
