How to Make Easy Thumbprint Christmas Ornaments
Here’s a sweet Christmas craft for kids and teens! These ornaments make great gifts, or you can even use them as gift tags. I also think they would be the perfect item to sell at a craft fair.
We used wood for these ornaments since we had several sections of a 1″ x 4″ board left over from our Lawn Tic-Tac-Toe project. However, you can easily swap out card stock instead! Cardboard from a box may work, but you’ll need to test your stamp pad to see if the ink will show up on brown cardboard. I’m thinking white card stock would be best.
Supplies Needed:
- 1″ x 4″ pine boards cut into rectangles. Ours are slightly taller than they are wide.
- Stamp pads in two different greens
- Brown and red paint or paint pens
- Ribbon
- Hot glue
- Pencil
- Scissors
Step 1: Cut your boards and sand them until they’re smooth.
Then gather your materials. I used acrylic paint and a tiny brush for the trunk and tree ornaments, but you can also use paint pens if you prefer.
Step 2: Lightly draw a triangle with a pencil. Then paint the trunk brown.
Step 3: Start making thumbprints! Depending on who is making this craft and the size of their hands, you might want to use a finger instead of a thumb.
I found it helpful to start with the three corners of the tree and then work out from there.
Keep making thumbprints, but leave some space for the second color of green.
Add light green prints.
Then add details to your tree with red paint. You may want to try painting a star at the top of the tree! So many options here.
Glue some ribbon to the back of the ornament with hot glue, and you’re all done!
Now make more ornaments and experiment with different designs. A wreath is fun to make!

What a cute toddler activity although we used a pencil eraser and a stamp pad. The little one hates to get gooey stuff on her fingers. With the tree shape pre-drawn, all was a success and turned out beautifully. After the green dried, we put dots of sparkly red on them. Cute! Thank you.
