Make beautiful fall leaf bookmarks with Sharpie markers and watercolor paints!

This fall craft for kids is super simple and the results are stunning.

I would recommend this craft for age 7 and up. As long as kids can doodle leaves, they can do this craft! And it’s fun for teens and adults as well.

Supplies Needed:

  • Watercolor paper, or heavy craft paper
  • Black Sharpie marker
  • Watercolor paints
  • Ribbon
  • Scissors
  • Hole punch

Step 1: Draw leaves all over your paper.

This must be done with a waterproof marker, so use a Sharpie or something similar. Black gel ink will not work! The lines will blur when you paint the leaves.

We looked online for leaf doodle inspiration, and then I just drew a variety of shapes. It’s very relaxing!

Step 2: Paint your leaves with watercolor paints.

This best part is that you don’t have to paint perfectly in the lines! If the watercolor goes over the edges a little, that’s great.

Here’s my finished page. So pretty!

Let the paint dry, and then there are so many things you can do with this. I was thinking about cutting a 4″ x 4″ square and putting it in a little frame that I have. But then Janie and I decided to make bookmarks.

Step 3: Cut out your bookmarks.

Janie got out a bookmark that she likes, and we traced it on the paper and then cut them out. That’s such a quick way to make bookmarks, but if you don’t have one to trace, you can easily draw lines with a ruler.

Step 4: Punch a hole and add some ribbon!

This step is not completely necessary, but it does make the bookmarks look nice. We pulled out of ribbon box and used some thin ribbon and some cord.

Then stick a bookmark in your favorite book! Or give one to a friend.

These would make great gifts for teachers, friends, grandparents, and more.

These bookmarks were all made by Janie (6th grade, age 11) completely on her own.
