How to Build a LEGO Rubber Band Catapult
This powerful LEGO catapult is tons of fun to build and play with! We have another LEGO catapult on this website already, and it uses rubber bands as well, but this new one is definitely an upgrade in power. It’s SO cool.
The design for this catapult is not 100% original with me. I started with this pin on Pinterest (no instructions included) and then modified the design to make it work better.
This LEGO catapult is SO easy for kids to shoot, and it launches the ball with a lot of force.
We used these little LEGO plastic balls, and I would not consider this to be a dangerous catapult. If you’re concerned about safety, you can always launch pom pom balls or marshmallows.
But personally I’d just use the LEGO balls or something similar and go for it!! Super fun.
Ready to build your LEGO rubber band catapult?
Gather the bricks shown for building the base.
You do need Technic bricks for the frame, but if you don’t have 1 x 16 bricks like the ones shown, you can use a combination of shorter bricks to make this same length.
Assemble the base as shown.
Grab the bricks shown below for building the catapult arm.
Use the 4 x 4 blue plate and the blue bricks to make a basket for your projectile. You can adjust the size of this if you’re going to launch something larger than a plastic LEGO ball.
Then connect two 1 x 12 Technic bricks with a 2 x 6 plate. Attach the basket.
Grab four 1 x 16 Technic bricks. Then find a Technic axle that is 12 studs long.
Slide the axle through two 1 x 16 bricks and then add a Technic bush. Add the shooting arm and then another Technic bush. Then add two more 1 x 16 Technic bricks. Put a Technic bush on each end to hold it all in place.
The 1 x 16 Technic bricks will rotate freely on the black axle. Swivel the outside brick toward the front of the catapult and the inside brick toward the back of the catapult. Do this on each side.
Use two blue Technic pins (3 studs long) to connect the Technic bricks on the back.
Then connect the Technic bricks to the frame in the front. Slide a Technic axle (5 studs long) through both bricks on each side. Add a bush on each side. You’ll need 4 bush total for the front end of the catapult.
Then slide a Technic axle (7 studs long) through the lowest hole on the shooting arm.
Stretch a rubber band around this axle and then around the axle on the front of the catapult base.
Now your catapult is complete!
To launch, just pull back the shooting arm, and then let go!
