Grab some scissors and make this paper plate snowflake craft!

We love making all sorts of snowflake crafts. Designing snowflakes is a creative activity and perfect for decorating in the winter.

We’ve made awesome paper snowflakes, and we’ve even made snowflakes with LEGO bricks.

These paper plate snowflakes provide a nice variation on the classic paper snowflake. Plates are interesting to cut on, and they are already round to start with, which is helpful. Since plates are thicker than paper, they are more sturdy than regular paper snowflakes. I think it would be fun to hang them from the ceiling in a classroom!

We’ll show you how to fold your plates so that you get a fabulous six-sided snowflake.

Supplies Needed:

  • Cheap uncoated paper plates. Look for the most basic brand you can find!
  • Scissors
  • Watercolor paints (optional)

Note: Paper plates require more hand strength to cut on than regular paper. I would recommend this project for kids age 10+. This is not a craft for young kids who are just learning to cut. However, this is a very valuable activity for older kids! It’s common for kids today to lack hand strength because of less outdoor play and more screen time. I’m a big fan of adding activities like this to your plans!

How to Fold a Paper Plate Snowflake:

Step 1: Fold the paper plate in half.

Step 2: Take the right side of the folded plate and fold it over by one third.

Step 3: Now fold the left side over so that the plate is folded in thirds.

Now you’re ready to cut! If you cut off the tip of the snowflake, you’ll have a cool hole in the center. You can make it a round hole or even make it look like a star.

Try cutting triangles. You can even make straight lines by making two parallel cuts. Then lift up the middle section and cut across the other way.

Then comes the fun part! Unfold your plate to see your snowflake!

I decided to experiment with cutting as many curved lines as possible. I really love how this one turned out!

It’s also fun to paint your snowflakes with watercolor paints!

You can make them any color, but blue and purple looks nice and wintery.

Have fun crafting!
